2016-01-31 14.03.52On Sunday 1 May 2016 Police Scotland and Galloway MRT asked for the assistance of Moffat Mountain Rescue team in the evacuation of a casualty from the hills above Glen Trool. Low cloud prevented the coastguard helicopter R999 in assisting Galloway MRT and meant that a protracted stretcher carry over difficult terrain would need additional rescue personnel to complete the evacuation.

The team drove to Newton Stewart and were on their way to Glen Trool when the weather improved enough to allow a window for the helicopter to attempt to fly to the team carrying out the stretcher evacuation. This was successful meaning that Moffat Team had a long drive back to Dumfries and then Moffat! Had the helicopter not been successful in getting to the casualty then the team would been needed to help their colleagues from Galloway MRT who still had an estimated 2 hours of stretcher carrying to complete over difficult ground.

Every year Moffat Mountain Rescue Team holds its annual charity walk in the hills around the team’s area of operation. There are 4 walks of varying difficulty to meet the needs of all comers. This years challenge is being held in the Durisdeer Hills on the 12 June. Find out more on our challenge page
